The youth worked on recycling, roof top gardens, car wash, and improving the parking lot. They developed a recycling guide and implemented building-wide recycling program.
This consisted of seperating the waste into three categories:
recyclable paper (i.e. mixed paper, newspapers, magazines and baled cardboard), other recyclables (i.e. aluminum, glass, plastic, steel cans and polystyrene), and non-recyclable trash. Students researched why it's important to recycle and where the recycled products go. They also created a rooftop garden. This consisted of planting vegetables and flowers in containers on the agency's second floor, flat roof facing West. They then watered and cared for the plants until maturity, and researched the reasons for turning an unsightly roof space into a green roof that is beatuiful and practical. To earn the money for these plants, they washed cars in the parking lot.
The last project they worked on was re-striping the parking lot. This consisted of using paint and a line striper to mark pavement and parking stalls. They used a stencil to mark handicapped parking, no parking, and visitor parking stalls accordingly. They also researched the required number of handicapped stalls necessary to stay in compliance with Wisconsin State law.
The youth gained a varity of skills working on this site, including team-building skills, research skills, and the basic skills required to perform the three projects, including gardening, painting, and project planning.
