Youth Services

The Workforce Development Center assists local youth in preparing for their future.  Workforce professionals connect youth to a large range of comprehensive, holistic services that include the following:

  • Tutoring & mentoring
  • Career assessment and planning
  • Work experience
  • Internships
  • Skills to  find, get, and keep jobs
  • Training & Education
  • Exposure to exciting creative ventures like film-making (Film Seed), pod-casting, & starting a business
  • Specialized help for teen parents truants
  • Work permits

All Racine county youth are welcome to visit the Workforce Development Center and meet with Career Discovery Specialist.  The Career Discovery Specialist will work on an individual basis to acquaint visitors with on-site resources and determine which services best meet one’s individual needs

Youth between the ages of 16-21 may be eligible for intensive services through one of the center’s contracted providers.  These services are provided within the center as well as throughout the community.  Eligibility is primarily based on income, but some services are based upon other circumstances.

All services are at no cost!

World of Work

Career Discovery Center

The WDC`s Career Discovery Center is designed for youth up to the age of 21. Career exploration software and other activities are available.  Located at the Racine County Workforce  Development Center (WDC), 1717 Taylor Avenue, Racine, WI, the Career Discovery Center is a valuable resource for young people at any stage of career planning.  Once you’re here you can pick and choose the type of information you want from a list of topics depending on your interests.  There are many different directions to choose from.  You can:

  • Identify types of careers you might enjoy
  • Browse thousands of college and university websites
  • Apply for college, technical schools, jobs or training
  • Find out about scholarships and financial aid 
  • And much more!

Career Discovery helps youth ages 16-21 years of age develop skills that will give them the edge in a competitive job market, including:

  • How to evaluate your strengths, interests, goals, and personal style
  • How to write a good résumé
  • How to effectively fill out an application
  • And other skills that will help you not only identify your goals— but reach them too!

CareerConnect is an initiative to meet Challenge One of the Higher Expectations Strategic Plan for workforce development in Racine County. It is a single point of contact for students seeking work-based learning opportunities and the employers who provide them.

Child Labor & Work Permits

All minors, age 14 to 17, who are offered employment in the State of Wisconsin MUST come in person to obtain a work permit.  Work permits are available at the Workforce Development Center in Racine or at Burlington High School. Check out the Racine and Bulington flyers for details regarding specific locations and forms that MUST be brought along at the time a permit application is made.

The following documents MUST be presented at the time the permit is issued (no exceptions):

1)  Any of the following original documents may be used as proof of age of the minor: 

  •   Birth Certificate or 
  •   Baptismal Certificate or 
  •   Valid Wisconsin drivers license or 
  •   Identification card from the Wisconsin Department Of Transportation 

2)  Original Social Security Card is an ADDITIONAL requirement.  If you are unable to provide the original social security card a current verification letter issued by the Social Security office is acceptable.       

3)  A signed "Intent To Hire" letter from the employer, preferably on the employers letterhead, with the following information:

  •  Employer’s address and 
  •  Employer’s telephone number and 
  •  Minor’s name and 
  •  Type of work the minor will perform and 
  •  Approximate weekly work hours

4)  Parents or Guardian Written Consent / Approval to the employment.

5)  Exact CASH ONLY since no change can be given.  A $10 bill, two $5 bills or ten $1 bills. (The Employer will reimburse the $10 to the minor)

CHECKS/CREDIT CARDS/DEBIT CARDS ARE NOT ACCEPTED
